Meningitis B vaccination before travel or higher-risk exposure

Meningitis B vaccination is not needed for every holiday. It is usually discussed when your risk is higher than average, such as certain close-contact settings, outbreak situations, or specific medical risks. At Liverpool Clinic in Liverpool, we can talk through whether MenB vaccination fits your plans, your previous vaccines, and your timescale. Useful, because this is a two-dose course for many older children, teenagers and adults. Last-minute bookings can be awkward.

A fast-moving infection that can start deceptively mildly

Meningococcal group B disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B bacteria. The bacteria can live in the nose and throat and spread through close contact with respiratory droplets or saliva. Brief passing contact is not usually the issue; shared accommodation, intimate contact, crowded social settings and prolonged exposure matter more. The illness can cause meningitis, septicaemia, or both. Early symptoms may look like a viral illness: fever, headache, aching muscles, vomiting, tiredness. A rash can appear, but waiting for a rash is poor strategy. Meningococcal disease can worsen quickly, sometimes within hours. For travellers, the concern is less about sightseeing and more about how you are living while away. University halls, camps, long stays with close group mixing, healthcare placements and outbreak areas can all make the discussion more relevant.

What Bexsero covers, and what it does not

Bexsero is a meningococcal group B vaccine. It is used for active immunisation against invasive meningococcal disease caused by group B strains and is licensed from 2 months of age. It is given as an injection into a muscle, usually the upper arm in older children, teenagers and adults. For adolescents and adults, the course is usually two doses, with at least 1 month between doses. Younger children and infants follow age-based schedules, so we assess those individually rather than squeezing them into an adult timetable. A booster may be considered for people who remain at ongoing risk. The vaccine cannot protect against every MenB strain, and it does not cover meningococcal groups A, C, W or Y. That matters. If you need meningitis vaccination for Hajj, Umrah, certain countries, or university entry, the required vaccine may be MenACWY instead, or as well. Common reactions include a sore arm, headache, feeling unwell, muscle aches or nausea. Vaccination is usually delayed if you have a high fever. Tell us about severe allergies, immune suppression, clotting problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and any previous reaction to a vaccine.

Risk is usually linked to exposure, not a simple country list

MenB is found in several parts of the world, including the UK, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. The vaccine is not normally chosen because someone is spending a week in a capital city hotel. It becomes more relevant where there is a known outbreak, long-term close mixing, study abroad, work in healthcare or laboratory settings, or a medical reason that raises your risk of invasive meningococcal disease. Some travellers ask for MenB because a school, university, employer or overseas programme has advised it. Bring that paperwork if you have it. If the instruction says “meningococcal vaccine” but does not name the group, check before booking; MenB and MenACWY are different vaccines.
